Parent and Student Resources

ECA, established in 1996, is a high school designed to services

students who require special education,  alternative education

or who have mild autism.  A skilled staff address the needs of

students who are in danger of not graduating with their class,

have chronic discipline problems, may be adjudicated or drug

and/or gang involved.

Most students are classified accordingly:

  • Specific Learning Disability

  • Emotional Disability

  • Behavioral Disability

  • Multiple Handicapped

Our school uses the most current and unique instructional practices in the field of education such as:

  • project based learning

  • differentiated instruction

  • blended learning

  • individualized computer based programs - increasing achievements in literacy and math skills

Students can track their daily progress or need for review.  By documenting skills and proficiencies, students earn credits toward graduation.  Portfolio Assessment is used to evaluate performance and determine grades as well as, quizzes and formal tests.

ECA teaches to the whole child and presents opportunities for the student to become responsible for their education.  A low student to staff ratio ensures this outcome.  Mentorships between students and teachers encourage consistent attendance that leads to the achievement of personal goals.  The staff and administration know the academic, emotional and social strengths and weakness of each student.

The development of a plan for each students responds to their interests, talents and curiosities and support the activity of goal setting.  Thematic instruction and cross curricular connections enlighten the learning experience.  Service learning activities take students outside of their environments and problems and give them a chance to feel empathy.

The personal IEP's or IPP's are aligned to the New Jersey Learning Standards and drive the plan of action for student achievement.  The structured environment, consistent schedule and point system all serve to increase self-esteem, responsibility and a vision for academic success.
